Below are answers to common questions about using ZIP Extractor - supported formats, keyboard shortcuts, privacy, Drive vs. local extraction, and troubleshooting. If you do not see what you need, contact support.

What is ZIP Extractor?

ZIP Extractor is a free web application for opening and creating ZIP files. It runs entirely in your web browser - there is nothing to install - and works with files from your computer, Google Drive, or Gmail. You can access it at zipextractor.app.

What is a ZIP file?

A ZIP file is a single file that groups one or more files (and folders) together. The contents are typically compressed so they take up less storage and transfer faster.

Why are ZIP files useful?

  1. Bundle related files. Send one ZIP instead of many separate files.
  2. Save space and time. Compression reduces file size and speeds transfer.
  3. Universal access. With tools like ZIP Extractor, anyone can open ZIPs for free.

Can ZIP Extractor create ZIP files?

Yes. Click Create New ZIP on the main page or visit zip.new. Add files and folders from your computer or Google Drive (drag-and-drop works too), then download the ZIP or save it to Google Drive.

Which file types can ZIP Extractor open?

In addition to ZIP (including ZIPX), ZIP Extractor supports RAR, 7-Zip (.7z), TAR, and compressed TARs: GZIP (.gz), BZIP2 (.bz2), LZIP (.lz), and XZ (.xz).

Do I need to download anything?

No. ZIP Extractor runs in your browser at zipextractor.app. There is no special software to download.

Can I preview files without extracting?

Yes. You can preview many formats directly from the ZIP:

  • Documents: PDF; text files like TXT, RTF, CSV; code and markup such as HTML, CSS, JS, JSON, XML.
  • Images: JPG, PNG, GIF, TIF, WEBP, BMP, SVG, HEIC.
  • Video and audio: MP4, WEBM, AVI; MP3, WAV (built-in audio player included).
  • Microsoft Office: DOCX, XLSX, PPTX (via "Preview in Drive").

Can ZIP Extractor play audio?

Yes. There is a built-in audio player for MP3, WAV, and other audio files. You will find play/pause, previous/next, shuffle, autoplay, and repeat controls. Click any audio file in the ZIP listing to start playback.

Does ZIP Extractor have a thumbnail grid view?

Yes. Open a ZIP and choose Grid view from the view selector in the upper right to browse image thumbnails.

Can I search inside a ZIP file?
